Tenbury Map!

I decided I wanted to create my own unique map for the Tenbury Wells information board. I wanted a clean, simple design included a little as possible to make it easy to understand for everyone. I started off with the map from the Tenbury Wells website.

This was a pretty complicated map with more information than I felt it would need for the information board. I also felt that the names of places included on the map could be confusing as they all seem squashed and can become hard to read. Although I do feel the colours do work on this version of the map, they aren't great.

I began drawing my map using the calligraphic stroke brush tool in illustrator. I felt this was the best option for me as I really like the clean finish to each line and when all linked up together worked really well.

Above it was finished outline with no colours. As i wanted to keep it simple it decided to just take basically outline of the roads and rivers from the main central part of Tenbury.

From the London information boards the one part that really stood out for me was the map and especially the use of colours.

Even though this map displays a lot of information(needs to be for such a big city) I feel that the colours help to separate each section and make it easier to understand. Using limited colours was something I was always going to do in the map design so thought as a starting point I would test these colours out on my own map.

Here was my final map using a simple colour palette to the London map design. Although the colours aren't displaying correctly here it still shows how a simple use off these colours splits the map up, therefore making it easy to understand. The black, grey, blue and green are all work well together and the contrast of these colours in my opinion is perfect for a map.
